Regional Project of the Month: Cape Town International Airport Redevelopment

This $1 billion enterprise to revamp and modernise South Africa’s Cape Town International Airport has experienced a number of setbacks over the course of 2020 as the pandemic interfered with work schedules and timelines. However, despite the ongoing difficulties of COVID-19, the project is still hitting or approaching key milestones, as December 2020 saw the main works contract for the $180 million new Terminal 2 development and Terminal 1 upgrade completed.

Around $260 million of the overall masterplan for the airport’s development works is to realign and improve the main runway, allowing the airport to accommodate the new generation of large aircraft, such as the Airbus A380.

Once complete, the renovated Cape Town International airport will enjoy having entirely new international and domestic departure lounges, as well as a greatly expanded domestic arrivals lounge complete with additional baggage collection carousels, and a reconfigured meet-and-greet area.
