Following a directive from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhab Municipality and the Abu Dhabi Police and traffic patrol services have begun replacing the traffic signs that lead to the Abu Dhabi International Airport with Zayed International Airport, reflecting the airport's new name. The renaming is a tribute to Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founder and first president, who served from 1971 until his passing in 2004.

As flights started from Terminal A, the unveiling of the new airport name marked a major step forward in Abu Dhabi's aviation legacy. In time for the new Terminal A's formal inauguration on February 9, 2024, the rebranding will be in full swing. Terminal A actually received its first commercial aircraft on October 31, 2023, with an Etihad Airways Airbus A350-1000 heading for New Delhi, even though the formal inauguration isn't until February. With 117 destinations served, Abu Dhabi will be even more of a global powerhouse in the aviation industry after the opening of Terminal A, which promises a tripling of flight frequency and accessibility.
