Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha has formally opened its new Concourses D and E, marking a significant milestone in the airport's expansion project, which began in 2018. This expansion raises the airport's annual passenger capacity to more than 65 million and adds 17 more aircraft contact gates, increasing the total to 62—nearly 40% more than previously.
The concourses include smart technology such as self-boarding systems for speedier document verification and shorter wait times, which improve passenger flow and connection. The extension also features a 14% increase in terminal space, which is now 845,000 square metres, as well as a reduction in the requirement for bus transfers, which streamlines operations.
The project's main focus is on passenger comfort and sustainability. The concourses feature updated shopping and dining options, including over 9 new businesses and 2,700 square metres of Qatar Duty Free area. The development is designed for GSAS 4-Star Design & Build Certification and aims for LEED Gold Certification. It includes energy-efficient technology and unique water management methods.
Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, CEO of Qatar Airways Group, emphasised the importance of this development in strengthening Qatar's position as a major aviation hub, addressing the changing demands of global travel while delivering ahead of schedule.
